Tumor Radiation Treatment TerraSpark technology is being applied to medical problems in radiation therapy treatment planning. This research integrates 3-D visualization, 3-D interaction with medical volumes (e.g. MRI, CT) and multi-modal radiation therapy planning. The goal is to reduce the time it takes to interpret data volumes defining healthy and tumorous tissue, improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the therapy planning process, and provide tools to aid in monitoring the progress of the therapy.

Three-dimensional anatomical visualization is becoming more important in radiation therapy to more precisely define the extent of the disease and surrounding critical normal tissues. Volume information derived from various imaging modalities (e.g., CT, MRI, and PET scans) is required for precise application of sophisticated radiation therapy techniques such as Stereotactic Radiousrugery (SRS), Conformal Radiation Therapy (CRT) and Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). Whole current technology allows for reconstruction of volume information for use in radiation therapy treatment planning and dosimetry, these techniques are time-consuming and subject to operator error. The goal of this project is to evaluate the impact of emerging computational and visualization techniques on visualization of the anatomical data, and demonstrate he potential for in improved speed and accuracy of treatment planning, dosimetry and treatment delivery. |
