Immersive Drilling Planner Fully integrated desktop and immersive visualization tool for planning and updating well paths and platforms in relation to 3D geophysical and geological data. Enables multi-disciplinary teams to use 3D visualization technology, state-of-the-art planning algorithms, and integrated subsurface data for field exploration and development planning.
|
BackgroundImmersive 3D visualization is used to integrate geological, geophysical, reservoir, and existing well data with drilling and platform planning information in a true 3D planning environment. Real-time creation and editing of targets, platforms, and wells allows multi-disciplinary teams to work through multiple planning scenarios, consider all critical factors, and generate high-level plans which can readily be updated to accommodate changing conditions. This combination of data integration, interactive editing, and collaborative workflow can greatly reduce cycle times in planning wells and improve the overall economics of development. Pilot projects have demonstrated reductions in cycle times from several months to a week or less.
Building upon ARCO\'s capabilities in spatially immersive visualization environments, a project began in 1998 to develop the ability to perform platform and well planning in an immersive environment. The resulting software, the \"Immersive Drilling Planner\", is now managed by TerraSpark Geosciences.
The Immersive Drilling Planner is designed to operate in various visualization environments including spatially immersive environments (with head and hand tracking), large flat or curved screen systems, immersive bench displays, desktop workstations and PCs, and laptops. IDP is currently available for Windows, Linux, SGI Irix and Altix.
Current ActivitiesThe Center\'s goal is to enable multidisciplinary teams to create a workflow in which targets, reservoir models, drilling trajectories, and even survey programs are subject to collaborative review and editing during drilling. The Immersive Drilling Planner has been available as a Gocad¨ 2.0 plug-in from Earth Decision Sciences since December 2002. Additional improvements and releases are planned for 2006.
The Drilling Visualization Research Consortium (DVRC) continues to do R&D for 3D visualization and design optimization tools to reduce drilling time, cost, and risk. The DVRC is focused on improving integrated, dynamic well and platform planning, visualization of well path uncertainty and collision risk, and automated design optimization. Previous projects have addressed drilling issues in mature field development, including R&D on sidetrack optimization, and the impact of 3D visualization for drilling, particularly the added value of immersion and 3D editing. |
